Your DIY website is basically an inflatable hot tub (and here’s why that’s a problem)

My cat attacked me in the hot tub the other night.

There I was—alone, under the stars, soaking in the misty waters — when it happened.

There was a blur of movement, a flash of claws, and suddenly I was reenacting a scene from Mission Impossible, complete with reflexes I didn’t know I had.

The truth is, I should’ve seen it coming.

Now, you might be wondering what this bizarre backyard ambush has to do with your website.

A lot, actually.

But before we dive into that (no pun intended), let me back up a bit...

A couple years ago, my husband and I decided to stop dreaming about having a hot tub and look into buying one.

We had had several false starts where we almost bought one, but for whatever reason it didn’t work out.

We were also hesitant because we knew we would be moving in the upcoming years and didn’t want to deal with hauling something that large twice.

Then a friend mentioned that she and her husband had an inflatable hot tub and they loved it.

It seemed like the perfect solution. Portable, affordable, and perfect for testing if we’d actually use it.

So we got one and we loved it too. (Pro tip for parents: It’s a built-in date night. No babysitter required.)

Fast forward to our big move last August. Let’s just say, the tub took the move and the subsequent weeks left on the patio in the sun hard. The vinyl had turned to Swiss cheese, and I was burning through patches faster than a Boy Scout troop at badge camp.

Ten patches later, it somehow held. We were back to our hot tub rituals like nothing ever happened.

Only, our cat suddenly decided it was her personal, heated throne. I had visions of her claws adding Hole #11. At this point I had exhausted my supply of vinyl patches and airstop glue.

So, I McGyver’d a cover with a blanket and some stray 4x4 chunks. We had now crossed into full redneck spa territory.

My cat had her cozy warm winter bed. I had a little reassurance my efforts weren’t for nothing.

The only problem was now, that every time we went in the hot tub, it threw my cat for a loop. She could not for the life of her understand how we were inside her bed

So there I was the other night, peacefully soaking under the stars when I heard a battle cry. She sprinted, launched herself off the edge like an Olympic pole vaulter, and landed claws-first on my shoulder. I channeled my inner Tom Cruise and dodged, twisted and deflected her.

Somehow, the hot tub survived. My arm? Not so much. (My cat also fared just fine, except maybe her pride.)

I took two lessons away from this event:

  1. Tom Cruise must be really sore after those fight scenes.

  1. Maybe we should just get the real thing. Then I wouldn’t have to live in fear of my cat’s psychotic episodes.

You might be living this exact struggle with your website.

That DIY website was perfect when you were starting out—like my inflatable tub. It was cheap, functional, and got the job done.

But now you’re patching holes left and right. Your DIY website is not reflecting how far your business has come, and honestly, it’s kind of embarrassing to show off.

Your business has grown. Your website should, too.

It’s time for a sleek, custom-designed, sales-generating powerhouse that works harder than a Red Bull-chugging intern pulling an all-nighter.

I get it—investing in a professionally designed site is scary. It’s a commitment.

Every big step in moving your business is. But those investments and commitments are a prerequisite for growth.

Staying in patch-it-up mode is what’s really costing you.

What got you here won’t get you there. And wouldn’t it be nice to relax—without worrying about your metaphorical cat launching itself at your business?

Let’s ditch the inflatable website. You - and me - are ready for the real thing.

Pin this for later!
